GENERAL CURRICULUM

Del Mattino Montessori School is committed to the Montessori approach to education; providing freedom within a prepared environment, stressing academic individualized learning and development for the whole child. The Montessori Method of education develops the child's five senses through manipulative materials in the classroom. The classroom is equipped with classic Montessori materials that provide for hands on education. These materials are arranged in a progression of graduating difficulty, allowing the child to progress at their own pace.
______________________________________________
The classroom is divided into five areas:

Practical Life:
This area contains materials that help the child develop skills that are needed in every day life. Among the practical life works are spooning, pouring, buttoning, zipping, snapping, sorting, etc. These exercises satisfy the need for movement in a young child. They help the child develop independence and a strong positive self esteem. They also help the child to develop fine motor skills and coordination for grasping a pencil and beginning to write.

Sensorial: This area of the classroom contains materials that help the child develop an ability to sort things by size, shape, color, touch, sound and weight. Children have the opportunity to grade from dark to light, loud to quiet and large to small. The Sensorial materials are mathematically graded and lay a solid foundation for geometry, geography and mathematics.

Mathematics: The children experience learning with physical materials to understand numbers, quantities and their symbols. Not only will children learn numerals and their quantities, but the four operations in concrete form as well. When doing addition, multiplication, subtraction and division, the children literally carry and borrow and change the quantities involved through the use of beads. As they put the beads together and take them apart, they perceive unconsciously the interplay of numbers, explore and memorize addition and subtraction.

Language: This area of the classroom includes a reading corner that is comfortable and filled with books that are inviting to the child. On the shelves in this area are materials that help the child develop writing skills with the correct letter formation and also sound recognition. The materials are phonetic based and focus on the introduction of the letter sounds to encourage early reading ability.

Geography and Science: With the geography materials the child is given his physical world. These materials provide an enlarged view of the child's world and about people and culture near and far away. The science area in the classroom includes "work" that the child may explore such as finding out what type of items are magnetic and which are not. Shell recognition may be studied as well as the life cycle of a butterfly, the parts of the plant, classifying animals into land, air or sea.
